Albums

Before Toto was formed, members of the band did session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggsalbum from 1975 Silk Degrees. The collaboration led to the formation of Toto in the year 1976.
Toto's third album, Turn Back, marked a departure from the more progressive sound of their previous albums, and was criticised for its lack of hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen left, and the band held auditions to choose a new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the group recorded their album Fahrenheit in 1986.
Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The band went through old tapes and recordings to create the unique record. The album was well-received by fans, and Toto began a tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
Shem von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as drummer during the tour in support of the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included live recordings from the tour and an interview with the band.

Drummer David Hungate also left the band following the tour. Leland Sklar took over his place.

Toto has released a number of music videos. The band has released a variety of compilation videos and DVDs. The most watched video by the group is "Africa" that has over one billion views on YouTube. The video is set in a library with the band performing on top of the stack of African books.
The song "Africa" is from the album Toto IV. It was written by band members and produced by David Paich. It was a huge hit in Europe and a variety of other countries. The success of the single helped Toto to regain their popularity following their previous album Turn Back failed to chart in America.
Toto embarked on a world tour following the release their album. The group featured touring musicians Lenny Castro and Shannon Forrest. Warren Ham, Shem von Schröeck, and Shem von Schroeck were also in the group. In addition guitarist Steve Lukather released his second solo album, Luke.
In 1985, Fergie Frederiksen, Toto's drummer, quit the group due to personal reasons. Toto held an audition to find an alternative for Frederiksen.
Prior to and during the creation of Toto its members, they did session work for various artists. Drummer Jeff Porcaro and bassist David Hungate performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs which led to the band's formation. Paich played keyboards on Steely Dan's records, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
In 1998, Toto started working on a project entitled Old Is New. The album featured three new tracks as well as several recordings of old songs. The album received a lot of attention all over the world and the band went on a worldwide tour to promote it.

Toto, known for the popular song "Africa", recently reunited to promote their new album, All In. The album, which was released on November 6, 2018 included three brand new tracks from the upcoming 40 Trips Around the Sun as also completed recordings of four tracks from the past with Jeff Porcaro playing drums and Mike or Steve Porcaro playing bass. The album also featured the cover of Weezer's track "Hash Pipe" that the band decided to include after hearing a version on the radio.
